It’s been six months since my last post. The last time I blogged I was on the mend, feeling almost 100% better in terms of energy level and my sleep had also been restored. When I look at the picture above, I’m in shock. I knew I had been feeling “old and tired,” but I didn’t know just how much it showed on my entire being. When I look at the picture of myself now, I feel it reflects the person that I truly am: full of energy and joy.
Despite my feeling radiantly healthy on the inside back when I last blogged, I had also been feeling impatient and ready to drop the weight that I had put on inexplicably over the past two years. When I begun working on my health with functional nutritionist Sagi Kalev, creator of Body Beast, he immediately established the list of priorities for me: 1) He was going to help me get healthy first and then 2) lose the weight. In fact, he assured me that losing the weight would be the easy part. We first had to get to the root causes of my fatigue, weight gain, and insomnia before we could begin to tackle the weight. What this told me was that he’s not into quick fixes or bandaids that only mask and exacerbate the underlying problem. Although I wanted a quick fix, I was willing to be patient if in the end I would feel and look great. I’m so glad I kept my faith and followed through on everything he recommended.
Just as he had assured me, the weight came off with incredible ease once that became the focus. (I urge you to check out my previous 3 posts to read about my struggle with weight gain and the causes.) Once I was healthy and after determining my food sensitivities, he gave me a list of foods I could and could not eat, and helped me create a meal plan based on that food list. I began working out to his program BodyBeast and with within a week, no joke, the weight began to come off. Here are my results after 2.5 months of consistently eating clean, drinking Shakeology, and working out to BodyBeast:
I’m a whole new, better version of myself from the inside out. For the past two years I had been working out like crazy (2 hours a day) and eating super duper clean to avoid putting on any more weight. Eating had become scary because it seemed that even a minor splurge would result in an added pound and it did! Little did I know that I had been eating all the wrong foods and that my body was begging to be healed. Today I continue to work out regularly to Body Beast, add additional cardio a few times a week (from FocusT25 to elliptical), and follow my meal plan (I stick to my list of allowed foods) and best of all, I do it all with no suffering or struggle. My body can afford to splurge on occasion and I am finally able to do so without fear of weight gain. Talk about a total transformation.
So where does this leave you? I receive a lot of messages from folks, mostly women, wondering if they should seek the help of a naturopath or functional nutritionist. A lot of folks also want to know what testing I did and what supplements I took. Here are my thoughts:
If you have committed yourself to losing weight and have not consistently worked out and followed the basic guidelines of eating clean, I would begin by doing those two things first. Seeking the services of a health professional is an investment, one worth its weight in gold, but an investment. In most cases, all you have to do is eat clean and work out. This is where Beachbody and I come in. Beachbody really does offer a total body solution: an in-home fitness program that tells you exactly what to do, provides a structured yet flexible meal plan, and the support of an online coach. If you get the program from me, I automatically become your coach and will support you through your journey. I invite you to join one of my 30-Day Challenge Groups. Please message me on www.facebook.com/BarbieDeckerFitness or email@example.com to learn more about my ongoing online challenges. If you already have a coach, please honor that relationship and reach out to them to inquire about challenges that they may be running.
If you feel that you have made a real effort to lose weight and or feel healthy and have not been able to see results, then perhaps it is time to seek the help of a naturopath or functional nutritionist. You can ask for referrals or you can check out Sagi’s services at www.sagikalev.com. If you decide to go with the latter, I would recommend setting up an initial consultation and together you can decide where to go from there. Because of my particular symptoms and issues, I did all the testing he lists on his page. But, again, one size does not fit all. I also won’t share the name of the supplements I took because I don’t want folks to self-prescribe!
Whether you’re looking to lose 10 or 50 pounds or are at the end of your rope, there is hope and you have choices. My intention in writing this blog post is that you see what some of these options are.
Sagi has been a God-send. He helped me restore my health so I could go back to doing what I do best as a Beachbody Coach: help other people get fit using Beachbody programs.
